Israeli Demographics and a New Plan For Peace

With the recent upheaval in the Israeli Political scene due to Ariel Sharon's unfortunate health it is a good time to examine his future plans for Israel. I know I'm going to get killed for this post but I hope people will read it through and keep an open mind.

The more I think about unilateral disengagement the more I believe it is the right thing to do. In hindsight it was foolish to ever think that the State of Israel could encompass the West Bank and Gaza. The demographics of such a state do not make sense. The problem is that in a Democracy all the citizens have the right to vote. For that reason if Israel is to maintain her Jewishness it is critical to limit the number of non-Jewish citizens. The best way to accomplish this is to give the Palestinians the State that they supposedly desire.

I'll take it a step further. I believe that the border fence should, where ever possible be designed to keep as many Arab villages on the Palestinian side. Even if that means crossing over the '67 borders in to Israel at points. I am also advocating East Jerusalem (and its 200,000 Arabs) as the Capital of this new Palestinian State. This final caveat however should be negotiated and not done unilaterally.

There is no benefit to Israel to have these Palestinians as Citizens of Israel. I say cut them off and wall them in. Give them their state and be done with them.

WHY? It's all about the demographics baby! The Palestinians are reproducing at alarming rates. Every family has 5,6,7, or more children. Israelis on the other hand are constantly declining in population. They get married later and have fewer children. All this spells trouble demographically.

The new left wing plan to destroy Israel is through demographics. The enemy knows that in a free and democratic society like Israel the majority rules. They know that if the Palestinians get close to the majority then they can simply vote for what ever terrorist leader they want. The sad fact is that the 15% of so of hard left Jewish Israelis would probably vote with them.

The new call of the left is for the one state solution in Israel. This is a new idea that has been gaining movement in academic circles. It goes hand in hand with protesting the construction of the separation wall. The new plan to destroy Israel demographically via the one state solution. The ironic thing is that both the Israelis and the Palestinians oppose such a plan. The only reason the left is pushing this idea is because of their virulent hatred towards the State of Israel. They despise any and all things secular and they view Israel as a Secular entity that must be destroyed. It's interesting that they seem to consistently side with Muslims whose stated goals are to create Islamist Taliban style governments throughout the world.

Getting back on point, because of the demographics, the best move for the ensured existence and prosperity in Israel is to disengage with the Palestinians where ever possible.

You have raised an interesting point: if Israel is to maintain her Jewishness it is critical to limit the number of non-Jewish citizens.
Yes, you're right. However, I don't like the idea of shrinking the size of Israel until it only encompasses Zionist Jews. That would leave us with a territory the size of Kansas City. And, though it would encourage hate-filled Arabs, they still wouldn't be satisfied until every last Jew was floating in the Sea.
I agree, give them a nation. Separate them, seclude them. However, I don't think that any more concessions should be made. Israel has given so much, and the Palestinians have only responded with violence.
Disengagement only works if it is reciprocal.

I do support the disengagement in Gaza. Demographically it does not make sense to try to hold it. It is better for Israel to seperate from the 1 million Palestinians living there. Who needs them anyway. As for East Jerusalem, I would not concede that automatically. At the same time I don't want the Palestinians there given Israeli citizenship. Of course the old city in Jerusalem must remain in Israels hands no matter what. But the portion East of the old city is loaded with Arabs and (don't kill me for this) may be partially ceded as part of some sort of final negotiated settlement years down the road.

Let me make it clear that I do not support shrinking Israel's borders. At the same time I think it is most important to seperate from the Arabs. If that means giving up some land where Arab villages fall on the Israel side in return for taking land where Israeli settlements fall on the "pre '67 side" then so be it.
